With its brand-new CMOS and processor combo, the Sony A7R6 has become the resolution flagship of Sony's full-frame mirrorless lineup.

Today we're pairing it with the 85mm F1.4 GM II to see what kind of magical moments this combo can deliver.

The A7R6 plus the 85mm F1.4 GM II — Sony's portrait king — is basically the top-tier setup for full-frame portrait work.

Pair elite resolution with a G Master prime, and we're just as curious about the sparks that'll fly.

The A7R6 packs a newly developed 61-megapixel full-frame stacked CMOS, paired with the next-gen BIONZ XR2 image processor.

Readout speed is about 5.6× faster than the previous A7R5.

And the 85mm F1.4 GM II — Sony's crowning portrait lens — is 178g lighter and 13% smaller than its predecessor.

Together, the balance feels right — even long handheld shoots don't feel front-heavy.

Image quality also sits near the peak of today's 35mm full-frame systems.

First, resolution — terrifying detail down to the pore level. What's a portrait shooter's worst fear? You zoom in and the hair melts into mush, lash edges go soft.

The A7R6's 61MP, plus the GM II's center sharpness wide open at F1.4, just crushes that anxiety.

In real tests we shot portraits under all kinds of tricky lighting — F1.4 wide open, focus locked on the model's eye.

Back home, we punched in to 200% on the computer — every detail at the focus point stayed crystal clear, and the catchlight in the pupil even showed as a complete specular highlight.

Zoom in again: iris texture is layered and crisp — the detail is honestly scary-good.

What surprised us even more was the edge performance — wide open at F1.4, the GM II's edge resolution clearly beats the Mark I.

We shot a half-body set with the model on the right third of the frame. Zoom in on the focus point — textures stay razor-sharp, not smeared.

Thanks to the GM II's optics, even the frame edges still hold a very high resolving standard.

Next up, the A7R6 body — that maxed-out 8.5-stop IBIS. On high-res bodies, the real enemy was never AF — it's camera shake.

A 61MP sensor is extremely sensitive to the tiniest vibration. With older high-res bodies, shutter speed was always the number photographers watched like a hawk.

The A7R6's 8.5-stop in-body stabilization is Sony's strongest yet. In dim indoor tests, even at 1/30s, keeper rates stayed impressively high.

Zoom in on the model's eyes — sharp, clean, no double imaging. For portrait shooters, that's a real productivity boost.

You stop constantly worrying whether the shot is soft, and can put more attention on framing and directing the model.

On AF, the A7R6's AI human-pose recognition keeps a lock even when the model turns her back.

In portrait work, the model won't face the camera forever — turning away, looking down, profile shots, getting blocked by foreground — that's all normal.

No matter how she poses, the green AF box stays glued to her eye — never lost it once. Even back-to-camera, it can lock onto head and body.

Plus the GM II's dual XD linear motors are about 3× faster than the previous generation — this combo's subject tracking is basically unfair.

She walks freely, spins, flips her hair — the camera feels like it has eyes of its own, glued to the pupil. Continuous AF/AE calculations keep every frame properly exposed with solid focus.

We also got a taste of the GM II's creamy bokeh from its 11-blade aperture.

Wide open at F1.4, the background melts like butter — soft-edged highlights, excellent onion-ring control, and a gentle transition with texture and depth.

Outdoors we shot a set against layered leaves and dappled light. Wide open, the bokeh balls are round and soft — like an Impressionist painting.

Yet facial sharpness doesn't drop off at all — skin texture and light falloff stay natural and refined.

The A7R6 also adds AI deep-learning auto white balance, combining visible-light and IR sensors to read the light source.

In mixed lighting — say daylight from the window plus warm indoor lamps — skin tones still look healthy and natural.

No weird yellow or cyan cast — so in post you don't have to sweat correcting white balance.

So — is the combo worth it? The A7R6 plus the 85 GM II runs well over 30,000 yuan; it's not cheap.

But if you're a working portrait photographer or a serious enthusiast with portraits at the center, the experience this combo delivers is hard to replace.

Terrifying resolving power from ~61MP, handheld confidence from 8.5-stop IBIS, grab-shot efficiency from AI AF, peak wide-open optics from the GM II —
